ABSTRACT
Filtration of water is a very important topic in the (JSS One) General Science syllabus. It is one way by which water could be purified and made safe for use.
It is of this view that the researcher adopted a way to construct a teaching and learning material to teach the topic.
The purpose of the study is to improvise a teaching and learning material to teach the topic, find out whether the use of improvised teaching and learning materials does help in teaching Science lessons and finally to help teachers and other researcher carry out their work with the improvised teaching and learning material as their basis.
The targeted population is Dodowa Methodist Basic One. It is the JSS Department where the researcher focused with particular attention at the JSS One class. In all, the study dealt with a Science tutor and fifteen (15) pupils.
The entire study is conducted using interview as the instrument and the data that is gathered are put in tables with figures converted into simple percentages.
The results of the study are based on the research questions and the responses the research subjects gave to the items in the interview schedule.
Finally, it must be recommended that the entire work is a successful one and hence would be suggested that the use of teaching and learning materials should be used intensively in the teaching and learning process. Where these teaching and learning materials are not readily available, teachers must be encouraged to use materials available in their immediate environment to construct one.
